How many projects does Stanton Moore juggle at one time? I don’t know the answer, but I am happy to see him live in any configuration. The renowned drummer of the funk/rock/jazz group Galactic (www.galacticfunk.com) brought one of his other groups, an instrumental quartet known as Garage A Trois (www.garageatrois.net), to the Mint in Los Angeles (http://www.themintla.com/) on August 14, 2010. CONCERTS: Los Angeles Clubs Hosting Benefit Concerts On July 1st

In the spirit of Independence Day, nationwide concerts will be hosted by music venues on July 1st, 2010 to benefit those directly impacted by the Gulf Coast Oil Spill. The organizers have created an ambitious goal: Gather music venues around the country to donate ticket sales on July 1st and create an online giving platform that encourages donations to the relief efforts. The fundraising goal is set at $500,000, which will be directed to the Gulf Restoration Network (http://www.healthygulf.org). The Network provides assistance to the people, wildlife and wetlands affected, as well as advocacy work throughout the Gulf Coast. Read More »

Ok, maybe that is an exaggeration, but with his talent and charisma, Trombone Shorty, as he is more commonly known, can, at least, rule the music world. His band, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave. (www.tromboneshorty.com) came to Los Angeles for a Wagatail Productions (www.wagatailpresents.com) show at the El Rey Theater. Concert: Galactic Brings the Funk to the El Rey Theater

New Orleans has a diverse music scene, and a long history of bands playing jazz/funk fusion. Galactic (www.galacticfunk.com) carries on that tradition and recently, has added elements of hip hop into their mix. On their newly released album “Ya Ka May”, the group invited a varied list of New Orleans musical talent to help with the broadening of their sound. Artists as diverse as Big Freedia (www.myspace.com/bigfreedia), a “bounce” hip hop singer, and Cyril Neville, one of the legendary founders of the Neville Brothers (www.nevilles.com/) offered their assistance with new songs. For their current tour, Galactic brought along Freedia, Neville, and Corey Henry, who is one of the talented trombonists from Rebirth Brass Band (http://rebirthbrassband.wetpaint.com/.) Their show at the El Rey consisted of new and old material. They pleased the loyal fans in attendance, and gained some new ones with the experimental diversion from their regular sound. Read More »
